The 2nd Maintenance Squadron’s Precision Measurement Equipment Laboratory (PMEL) at Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier, Louisiana, calibrates and maintains an inventory of more than 6,700 pieces of equipment for Team Barksdale. With countless tools and test equipment used by ground crews every day, one shop is responsible for maintaining the standard of accuracy and calibration of the equipment. By ensuring the most accurate tools and equipment at Barksdale, the PMEL streamlines workflow and saves the Air Force money by having one centralized location on base.

Viewing the amount of wine produced around the world presents the fact that winemaking is big business. And with the development of new wineries increasing exponentially, winemaking is becoming more and more competitive. The increasing amount of wine drinkers tends to support the ever-rising number of wineries. As with any competitive business, the product produced must be of good quality in order to appeal to potential customers. All wineries recognize this fact and successful wineries have gone to great lengths to ensure that the product produced is of the best possible quality.

Most foods sold in the developed world contain substances added for a desired beneficial purpose. In the case of food preservation, many compounds are added to foods that curtail the process of oxidation and kill pathogens. With respect to winemaking, additives are used although not for the exact same reasons. It is important to remember that oxidation is always a problem with winemaking. Pathogens however do not present a problem due to the makeup of wine itself. The presence of alcohol as well as the acidic nature of wine presents an environment where pathogens cannot survive.

A culture of quality along with specific business programs must exist within a winery if quality control procedures are to be effective. Quality initiatives must be understood and practiced by all employees of the winery. From the workers handling the grapes in the field to the filling machine supervisors, all individuals involved have an equal part to play in maintaining the quality of the final wine. The successful winery realizes this and implements systems designed to naturally promote quality procedures at every point within the winemaking process.

Due to globalization and advancing technology, today’s manufacturing environment is increasingly competitive. Therefore, the accuracy and quality of machined durable goods is extremely important if a company wants to stay competitive. Of course, having the necessary equipment to perform the inspection of these parts is critical and can require large capital investments. Many manufacturing companies include a quality control department that will verify manufactured parts, as well as the tools used to produce parts. The measured results need to conform to standards and specifications provided by the customer. The most common machines to do this are coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), optical comparators, and video inspection machines.

Bean-to-cup coffee makers manufactured at De’Longhi can produce a cup of coffee by just feeding beans at the touch of a button. These machines include a boiler, grinder, brewing unit, and in most cases, a steamer. The machines are manufactured on assembly lines with each unit individually manufactured and tested before the finished system is assembled.  In late 2006, De’Longhi began another process of evaluating that testing procedure, the goal being to implement a system to guarantee the quality of every finished coffee maker leaving its site. A main reason for achieving this was for complete product testing. There was also a desire to quantify the product quality. 

If a manufacturer were to ask its clients how they evaluated goods or services, the three most common metrics would be goods at a fair price, on-time delivery, and quality. Ask which could be most valuable and in all likelihood the most significant response would be quality. When included in the product, quality isn’t a cost but a powerful tool leading to the economic success of the business.
